The main goal of UNIGIS programmes is to equip students with profound and extensive knowledge, insights, skills, and expertise in the field of Geographic Information Science; to train students in scientific research; to establish an attitude of life long learning; and to orientate students towards further career development.

Programmes are focussed on life-long learning, supporting part-time study by in-service professionals as well as everybody pursuing a career in Geoinformatics through continuing education.

Programmes consist of innovative courses presented to professional standards. They are designed to meet the needs of professional practice; to give an understanding of the technical, geographical and organisational aspects of GIS; to provide hands-on experience; and to ensure a conceptual and practical background in the design and implementation of GIS projects.

Courses within the UNIGIS network will satisfy professional development needs and are ideal for in-service training.

The curriculum is structured in learning modules, requiring 6-10 weeks of work each. Module topics cover e.g. Spatial Data Models, Databases, Spatial Statistics, GIS Analysis, Visualisation and Cartography, Application Development and Interoperability/SDI; plus elective subjects like Remote Sensing, various GIS application domains, LBS, GPS etc.
